Biofouling has always been a difficult problem for the production and operation of coastal ports, and biofouling in the port area will cause accelerated corrosion of key components and monitoring equipment such as sensors in port facilities, and reduce the service life. Therefore, in-depth study of marine biofouling coating prevention and control technology is of great significance to enhance the safety level of coastal port area facilities and extend the maintenance cycle and service life of equipments. Based on a survey of biofouling organisms in port areas, this study summarizes the dominant species and attachment processes of biofouling organisms in shallow coastal waters across China’s four major sea areas. Based on the action mechanisms of anti-fouling coatings, existing antifouling coating technologies are categorized into three types: chemical methods, physical methods, and biomimetic/intelligent methods. It focuses on analyzing the challenges of applying anti-fouling coating technology in static anti-fouling scenarios and complex multi-environmental conditions, aiming to provide scientific references for the future application of biofouling coating prevention and control technologies in coastal port areas.
